Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez: Republican Platform is ‘Super Weird’

By Jake Beardslee · July 29, 2024

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) has reinforced the Democratic strategy of labeling the Republican presidential ticket as "weird," despite criticism from former GOP presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy.  Akash Pamarthy / USA TODAY NETWORK

Ramaswamy took to social media platform X to express his disapproval of the Democrats' approach, stating, "This whole 'they're weird' argument from the Democrats is dumb & juvenile. This is a presidential election, not a high school prom queen contest. It's also a tad ironic coming from the party that preaches 'diversity & inclusion.' Win on policy if you can, but cut the crap please."  Megan Smith / USA TODAY NETWORK

In response, Ocasio-Cortez defended the strategy, arguing, "Being obsessed with repressing women is goofy. Trying to watch what LGBTQ+ people do all the time is abnormal. Punishing people who don't have biological offspring is creepy. It's an incel platform, dude. It's SUPER weird. And people need to know."  Aaron E. Martinez/American-Statesman / USA TODAY NETWORK

Various Democratic politicians have recently adopted and promoted this characterization of the GOP platform.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) recently claimed in an interview with CBS’s Robert Costa on “Face the Nation” that Trump's selection of Vance as his running mate was "one of the best things" the former president has done for Democrats.  Daniel DeLoach/Utica Observer-Dispatch / USA TODAY NETWORK

Senator Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii) also weighed in on the issue, stating, "Assigning extra votes to certain people based on the size of their family is weird. Banning library books is weird. Government being in people's bedroom is weird. Government being in the exam room is weird. Saying 'weird' is not a schoolyard taunt – it's an observation."   Jack Gruber-USA TODAY

When asked about these characterizations during a Fox News interview, Vance dismissed their impact.  Megan Smith / USA TODAY / USA TODAY NETWORK

Vance stated, "No, not at all. It doesn't hurt my feelings. Look, the price of admission — meaning, the price of getting to serve the people of this country — is the Democrats are going to attack us with everything that they have. I think it's an honor."  Megan Smith-USA TODAY
