Chris Christie called former President Donald Trump “a one-man crime wave” as he assumed the role of tough-talking curmudgeonly spoiler in his campaign for the 2024 GOP presidential nomination.
Former New Jersey Gov. Christie laid out the long litany of legal challenges facing Trump as the former President mounts his presidential bid. In an interview on “Pod Save America”, Christie, a former federal prosecutor, said Trump faces the prospect of four to six trials within a span of 10 months. The trials include a civil fraud case, a defamation sequel, the Hush Money trial, the classified documents case, and the January 6th riot case.
Christie rejected the argument that Trump’s legal troubles are the result of a weaponized Justice Department, insisting they are entirely self-inflicted. He then asked, “Do we want someone as president who is willing to pay off a porn star… to hide it from the people who he’s asking for their vote for president United States? I think that’s probably conduct that we should be frowning upon.”
Christie, a one-time Trump ally, added that if Trump is convicted, there would be a presumption of jail time, however a judge would have discretion in making the final decision. Given Trump’s age at 77, Christie believes a judge might be hesitant to impose what would equate to a “death sentence” on the former President.
