Jaguar Land Rover Recalls 170,000 US Vehicles Over Loss of Drive Power

If you own a Jaguar or Land Rover, check your vehicle identification number before your next drive.
Jaguar Land Rover is recalling 170,169 vehicles in the United States over a defect that can cause a sudden and unexpected loss of drive power — a failure that can occur while the vehicle is in motion and leave drivers unable to accelerate, particularly dangerous at highway speeds or when merging into traffic.
The recall covers a range of models across both the Jaguar and Land Rover lineups. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has opened the recall, and affected owners will be notified by mail. Owners who want to check immediately whether their vehicle is included can enter their VIN at nhtsa.gov.
The loss-of-drive-power defect is classified as a safety issue rather than a mechanical nuisance because the failure can happen without warning and at any speed. A vehicle that abruptly loses propulsion while traveling at 65 miles per hour on a freeway, or while attempting to complete a left turn across oncoming traffic, presents a direct risk to driver and occupant safety.
JLR has not publicly disclosed the root cause of the failure or whether any injuries or accidents have been reported in connection with the defect. Dealerships are expected to perform the repair at no cost to owners once parts and service procedures are confirmed. The timeline for that process has not been announced.
Jaguar Land Rover has faced a series of quality and reliability challenges in recent years. The brand, which is owned by India’s Tata Motors, has been in the middle of a significant product repositioning — including a controversial rebrand of the Jaguar nameplate — while simultaneously dealing with supply chain disruptions, electrification costs, and tariff pressures affecting imported vehicles.
For affected owners, the immediate steps are straightforward: check your VIN at nhtsa.gov, register your vehicle with the recall database if it is included, and contact your nearest authorized JLR dealer to schedule the repair when it becomes available. Do not ignore the mailed notice when it arrives.
