Veteran CNN Anchor Jim Acosta Set to Exit Network After Programming Shakeup

Jim Acosta, one of CNN's most well-known anchors, is reportedly leaving the network following significant changes to its programming lineup. Acosta's popular 10 a.m. show has been replaced by "The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer and Pamela Brown." While CNN CEO Mark Thompson offered Acosta a new midnight-to-2 a.m. slot, the anchor is said to have declined the offer and will pursue new opportunities outside the network, according to The Hollywood Reporter.  Gage Skidmore / Wikimedia

Acosta Declines Late-Night Role in Programming Overhaul

Acosta, who has been with CNN since 2007, reportedly declined an offer to host a midnight-to-2 a.m. show, a decision that insiders say reflects his dissatisfaction with the new direction at the network. The midnight slot, referred to by one source as "the Siberia of television news," would have represented a significant demotion for the veteran journalist, whose morning show consistently attracted some of CNN's highest ratings.  Legoktm / Wikimedia

CNN Reshapes Strategy and Staff

The programming shake-up is part of CNN's ongoing effort to adapt to shifting audience preferences. Thompson explained that the changes are necessary to "respond to profound and irreversible shifts in the way audiences in America and around the world consume news." The overhaul also coincides with layoffs impacting 6% of CNN's workforce as the network pivots to a digital-first strategy.  CNN International / Wikimedia

From White House Clashes to Cable News Star: Acosta's Defining Moments

Acosta's departure marks a turning point for CNN. A polarizing figure, he rose to prominence as chief White House correspondent during the Trump administration, where he became known for his heated exchanges with the former president. In one memorable 2018 incident, Acosta refused to relinquish a microphone during a press conference with Trump, prompting the White House to revoke his press pass, according to The Independent. The move led to a legal battle, with CNN successfully arguing that it violated Acosta’s First and Fifth Amendment rights.  Gage Skidmore / Wikimedia

Behind the Reshuffle: Examining CNN's Programming Strategy

Critics have speculated that CNN's decision to remove Acosta from his morning slot and offer him a less desirable late-night position may have been politically motivated. Some suggest the move was intended to appease Trump, who has long been critical of the outspoken journalist. However, CNN leadership has denied these claims, insisting the changes are part of a broader effort to modernize the network's programming.  Gage Skidmore / Wikimedia

While Acosta has not yet made a formal announcement, he is expected to address his departure during Tuesday's broadcast. His exit reflects the challenges faced by cable news networks as they navigate an increasingly competitive and polarized media landscape.  Legoktm / Wikimedia
