By Jake Beardslee · December 20, 2024

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) has expressed support for billionaire Elon Musk to become Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives. Her remarks followed Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) suggesting the idea on X, formerly known as Twitter.  Megan Smith-USA TODAY

Paul had declared, “Nothing would disrupt the swamp more than electing Elon Musk," emphasizing his belief that Musk’s unconventional leadership could dismantle what he termed the political "establishment."  Michael Clevenger/Courier Journal / USA TODAY NETWORK

Greene quickly echoed the sentiment, replying, “I’d be open to supporting [Musk] for Speaker of the House. DOGE can only truly be accomplished by reigning in Congress to enact real government efficiency.” She added, “The establishment needs to be shattered just like it was yesterday. This could be the way.”  Gage Skidmore / Wikimedia

The calls to install Musk as speaker come as the billionaire remains embroiled in controversy. The New York Times recently reported that the Air Force denied Musk a high-level security clearance after he failed to report meetings with foreign leaders.  Jack Gruber / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images

Moreover, Musk faces multiple federal investigations for potentially violating reporting requirements, including alleged communications with Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to The New York Times.  Kremlin.ru / Wikimedia

These incidents have fueled concerns among lawmakers like Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), who requested investigations into Musk’s foreign dealings.  U.S. Senate Photographic Studio, John Klemmer / Wikimedia
