Marjorie Taylor Greene on Biden’s attempt to reduce airline fees: ‘Pandering for votes’

By Jake Beardslee · February 5, 2024

Americans agree airlines charge too much for basic amenities like luggage and seat selection. President Biden proposed eliminating seat selection fees for families with children, but Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene opposed it, saying Biden should focus on closing the border instead.  Gage Skidmore from Surprise, AZ, United States of America/Wikimedia

Greene accused Biden of "pandering for votes" with the proposal. Greene is also currently opposing Biden's border reform package.  Gage Skidmore from Surprise, AZ, United States of America/Wikimedia

Biden said families should be able to fly and sit together without paying extra fees, calling it "time airlines offered fee-free family seating." He also condemned "drip pricing" tactics that hide full costs.  Gage Skidmore from Surprise, AZ, United States of America/Wikimedia

In October, Biden announced an initiative to eliminate junk fees and increase transparency in various industries. This includes requiring companies to show full prices upfront. Biden also proposed a rule to end excessive overdraft fees by banks and financial institutions. The proposal to eliminate family seating fees was introduced last March but opposed by airlines.  The White House/Wikimedia

Greene continued criticizing the proposal, saying the president's social media accounts are run by "20 year olds that don't understand ANYTHING about business." She told Biden in a post on X to "take the POTUS social media accounts away from" them.  Gage Skidmore from Surprise, AZ, United States of America/Wikimedia

Hopefully more parents will have a smoother travel experience if family seating fees are eliminated, despite opposition from Greene and airlines.  qwesy qwesy/Wikimedia

Greene claims Biden should focus on other issues than airline fees and is just "pandering for votes." This reflects the partisan divide and disagreement over policy priorities.  Gage Skidmore from Surprise, AZ, United States of America/Wikimedia

Airlines rely on ancillary fees like seating charges for revenue but consumer advocates argue these fees are excessive and anti-family.  Simply Aviation/Wikimedia

The proposal faces uncertainty but could make family travel less stressful. Some view Greene's comments more focused on partisan point-scoring than substantive policy debate.  Gage Skidmore from Surprise, AZ, United States of America/Wikimedia
