Marjorie Taylor Greene presses brakes on Biden impeachment train, says Mayorkas her ‘focus’
By Jake Beardslee · February 16, 2024
In brief…
- Rep. Greene said she is not currently focused on impeaching Biden, but rather on the Mayorkas Senate trial.
- The House Oversight Committee is investigating Biden over Hunter's foreign business dealings.
- Mayorkas was impeached in the House.
- The Biden impeachment bid was hurt by an indictment of an FBI informant against Hunter.
Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene indicated she is not yet ready to impeach President Joe Biden, telling Newsweek her “focus” is on the impending Senate impeachment trial of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.
The vocal supporter of former President Donald Trump has previously advocated for Biden’s impeachment, posting on X earlier this week that “There are MANY reasons to” impeach Biden, citing accusations he “weaponiz[ed] the DOJ against Trump and his political enemies” and alleged “corrupt Biden Inc family business with foreign countries to the open border.”
However, when asked by Newsweek if it is time to impeach Biden after the House impeached Mayorkas, Greene responded: “I serve on the Oversight Committee, and we’ve got to finish our investigation there. We still have several more depositions to do. James Biden and Hunter Biden are coming in, and then we’ll complete our investigation.”
The House Oversight Committee is leading an impeachment inquiry into Biden regarding his son Hunter’s foreign business dealings, which Republicans claim the president benefited from. Biden has denied wrongdoing and dismissed the probe as a “baseless political stunt.”
The impeachment of Mayorkas, who oversees the U.S.-Mexico border, passed the House Tuesday. Greene told Newsweek the committee will hear the Bidens’ depositions and “right now our focus is…I’m serving as an impeachment manager over in the Senate, so hopefully they’ll be willing to take up the trial.”
Meanwhile, the impeachment effort against Biden was recently undercut when an FBI informant who made claims about Hunter Biden’s Ukraine dealings was indicted for allegedly fabricating evidence. Hunter Biden’s lawyer slammed House Republicans for “building their conspiracies…on lies.”
