A LA Congressman Admitted to an Affair the Same Day Congress Found Additional Misconduct

By Mike Harper · June 3, 2026

The sequence of events on Tuesday for Representative Jimmy Gomez of Los Angeles was particularly difficult to manage.

CNN reported in the morning that the House Ethics Committee — which had been investigating a 2023 incident in which Gomez allegedly kissed a younger congressional aide without consent — had discovered additional sexual misconduct allegations during the course of its inquiry. The investigation, originally limited to the kissing incident first reported by the New York Post in April, had expanded.

Gomez issued a public statement the same day.

“I have made personal mistakes outside of my marriage and I take full responsibility for my actions. I am deeply sorry for the pain I’ve caused my family, and I am committed to repairing those relationships.”

He did not specifically address the Ethics Committee investigation or the additional allegations CNN had reported hours earlier. The statement was his first public acknowledgment of any personal misconduct.

Gomez, 45, represents California’s 34th Congressional District, which covers downtown Los Angeles and the surrounding area. He has served in Congress since 2017 and is a member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus. He is running for reelection in 2026. The Ethics Committee investigation is ongoing, and its scope — which now apparently extends beyond the initial kissing allegation — has not been fully disclosed publicly.

The aide involved in the 2023 incident has not been identified by name. The New York Post’s original April reporting described the incident as occurring at a congressional event, involving a junior staffer, and being witnessed by others. Gomez did not dispute the Post’s characterization when it was first published but had not addressed it directly until Tuesday.

The House Ethics Committee has jurisdiction over member conduct and can recommend censure, expulsion, or other disciplinary action. Its investigations are conducted confidentially until it chooses to release findings. The fact that the committee’s inquiry has grown beyond its original scope suggests investigators found material during their review that warranted expanding the investigation — a pattern that has historically preceded more significant findings in prior Ethics investigations.

Gomez did not announce whether he would continue his reelection campaign. His office did not respond to a follow-up request for comment after the CNN story published.
