A Georgia man has been arrested and charged with threatening to kill Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene, her family, and her staff, according to the office of the representative, CNN reported.
34-year-old Sean Patrick Cirillo of Macon allegedly called Rep. Greene’s office on Wednesday and threatened to shoot and kill her. Greene’s office shared a recording of the threatening call with CNN, in which the caller can be heard saying “I’m going to murder her; I’m going to shoot her in the (expletive) head and kill her, OK. Tell the FBI.” The caller also yelled “You’re going to die. Your family is going to die.”
Cirillo has been charged by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Georgia with using communications devices to make threats, which is a felony offense. CNN has not been able to determine if Cirillo has an attorney at this time.
“I want to thank every single member of law enforcement who acted swiftly in response to this murderous threat,” Rep. Greene said in a statement to CNN. She thanked the Rome City Police, Floyd County Sheriff’s Office, U.S. Capitol Police, House Sergeant at Arms, and the FBI for their quick actions in arresting Cirillo.
Rep. Greene said she is not the only one threatened by this incident. “My family is threatened. My staff is threatened. I even had to close my district office due to the potential of violence. It’s wrong and never should happen,” she said.
The investigation is ongoing.
