Biden Campaign Ties Marjorie Taylor Greene to Trump in Bid to Sway Moderates

By Jake Beardslee · April 3, 2024

When President Joe Biden walked into the House chamber in March for his State of the Union address, he reacted with mock surprise at seeing Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) decked out in Donald Trump's signature "Make America Great Again" red hat and gear.  The White House/Wikimedia

Biden's reaction to the congresswoman "is all of us," Biden's campaign posted on TikTok with the video.  @bidenhq/TikTok

It kicked off an effort by Biden's team to link Greene's controversial views and actions to Trump in the minds of voters.  Gage Skidmore from Surprise, AZ, United States of America/Wikimedia

Two days after the State of the Union, as Trump campaigned in Greene's home district, the Democratic National Committee commissioned billboards along highways showing their faces together and blaming the pair for halting a major border security funding bill.  Gage Skidmore from Surprise, AZ, United States of America/Wikimedia

Biden himself weighed in that day in Atlanta, saying of Trump's campaign stop with Greene that the company one keeps "can tell you a lot."  The White House/Wikimedia

Greene has been "a champion for extremism, a champion for election denialism, and someone who fundamentally is trying to, alongside Donald Trump, tear down the fabric of our democracy," Biden campaign communications director Michael Tyler told Time.  Gage Skidmore from Surprise, AZ, United States of America/Wikimedia

The campaign has tested well with moderate Republican and independent voters when using phrases like "MAGA Republicans" to describe Trump's wing of the GOP. They see an opportunity in Greene's high profile as a promoter of false claims that the 2020 election was "stolen" and other conspiracy theories.  Gage Skidmore from Surprise, AZ, United States of America/Wikimedia

"Why is the Republican speaker doing the bidding of the communist Democrats?" Greene posted on X last month as she led an effort to oust House Speaker Mike Johnson over his bipartisan spending deal that funded the government through September.  Gage Skidmore from Surprise, AZ, United States of America/Wikimedia

The Biden team mocked the move on TikTok by highlighting Greene's past praise of Johnson and his predecessor Kevin McCarthy becoming Speaker.  Tom Williams (CQ Roll Call)/Wikimedia

When Greene took office in 2021, Democratic House leaders stripped her of committee assignments over social media posts that encouraged violence against their members, NPR reported.  Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene/Wikimedia

Biden's campaign appears to be betting that reminders of Greene's most extreme positions and associations with Trump could push away moderate voters in the 2024 election.  U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs/Wikimedia
