In brief…
- Haley recounted being taught as a child to emphasize similarities over differences when facing discrimination for being Indian-American.
- Asked if sexism could hinder her candidacy, Haley stated she does not worry about being a woman and critiqued use of demographic labels in politics.
- Charlamagne tha God noted Haley could be the first female Republican nominee.
In an interview on “The Daily Show,” guest host Charlamagne Tha God questioned Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley on why she doesn’t place focus upon characteristics of her identity. He pointed out that in recent election cycles, Democrats have emphasized the demographic diversity of their candidates. Similarly in 2023, the GOP primary field is historically diverse, with Haley as the first female and Indian-American contender.
Haley responded, “I don’t want to just be a woman. I don’t want to just be Indian. I don’t want to just be a mom. I don’t want to just be a Republican. I’m more than that.” She recalled her mother teaching her, “Your job is not to show them how you’re different, your job is to show them how you’re similar.”
Asked if sexism could hinder GOP support for her, Haley quipped, “I wear heels. It’s not for a fashion statement. It’s because if I get mad, you know, I’m ready to kick any time.” She stated, “I don’t worry about being a woman at all.”
Charlamagne previously applauded Haley’s debate performances, saying Republicans should “clear the field” for her. Haley has risen in polls but still trails Trump for the nomination.
