By Jake Beardslee · January 5, 2025

Former Representative Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) responded to recent comments by President-elect Donald Trump about the January 6 Capitol attack, urging Americans to reject "malicious falsehoods" and uphold democratic principles as the fourth anniversary of the event approaches.  Jack Gruber, Jack Gruber / USA TODAY NETWORK

“Donald, this is not the Soviet Union. You can’t change the truth and you cannot silence us,” Cheney wrote in a post on Bluesky.  @lizcheney.bsky.social‬ / Bluesky

Cheney’s remarks came after Trump criticized President Joe Biden for awarding the Presidential Citizens Medal to Cheney and Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.) for their roles in the House committee investigating the Capitol attack.  Gage Skidmore / Wikimedia

“Liz Cheney, Cryin’ Adam Kinzinger, Bennie Thompson, and the rest of these dishonest Thugs have gotten away with horrible things under the pretense of January 6th,” he wrote in a post on Truth Social.  Gage Skidmore / Wikimedia

Trump’s posts included additional claims, such as accusing former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) of having “refused to accept the help which was offered for security” on January 6, a statement that has been debunked. Trump also criticized committee members, describing them as dishonest and suggesting they had caused harm under the guise of investigating the attack.  Mikala Compton/American-Statesman / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images

Cheney also reminded Trump of the events surrounding the Capitol attack. “Remember how you sent a mob to our Capitol and then watched the violence on television and refused for hours to instruct the mob to leave? Remember how your former Vice President prevented you from overturning our Republic? We remember,” she wrote.  Sergey Guk / Pexels

Last month Trump used his Truth Social platform to allege that Cheney committed “egregious and unthinkable acts of crime.” “The statement came in the wake of Republican critiques, which labeled the committee’s performance as a ‘failure’ in an interim report.”

In a sharp rebuttal, the ex-congresswoman, Cheney dismissed the GOP-backed report, claiming it “disregards the truth,” and characterized Trump as a “cruel and vindictive man."  Gage Skidmore / Wikimedia
