Marjorie Taylor Greene Compares House Speaker to Pelosi, Vows to Oust ‘Democrat’ Johnson

By Jake Beardslee · April 4, 2024

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) intensified her criticism of Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) on Wednesday, equating him to a Democrat as she maintained her threats to try removing him from the Speaker's position.  Gage Skidmore from Surprise, AZ, United States of America/Wikimedia

In an interview with CNN's Manu Raju, Greene showed no signs of backing down despite warnings from fellow Republicans. She criticized Johnson for reaching a bipartisan deal on a $1.2 trillion spending bill that prevented a partial government shutdown.  Gage Skidmore from Surprise, AZ, United States of America/Wikimedia

Greene has criticized the bill for relying on Democratic votes, lacking GOP policy priorities, and not being released with enough time for review before the vote.  Gage Skidmore from Surprise, AZ, United States of America/Wikimedia

She said, "People are fed up with Republicans that say one thing and turn around and literally join the flock and just continue the same old crap everybody's tired of," likening Johnson's tactics to those of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and former Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.).  Gage Skidmore from Surprise, AZ, United States of America/Wikimedia

Greene stated, "He's literally turned into Mitch McConnell's twin and worse. He's a Democrat. There's not even any daylight between him and Nancy Pelosi at this point."  Gage Skidmore from Surprise, AZ, United States of America/Wikimedia

When asked about the possibility of a more moderate Speaker replacing Johnson, Greene dismissed the suggestion, saying, "We cannot get anyone more moderate than Mike Johnson. I would argue Mike Johnson, we can't get any further left than Mike Johnson. I think the Democrats might be happier with him than they are with Hakeem Jeffries."  Gage Skidmore from Surprise, AZ, United States of America/Wikimedia

After negotiating the spending package last month, Greene introduced a resolution to remove Johnson as Speaker. While she has not yet forced a vote on the motion, Greene has continued to push for removing Johnson and warned that she would act on her threat if he proceeds with a Ukraine aid package as planned.  Office of Speaker Mike Johnson/Wikimedia

Johnson acknowledged sharing Greene's frustrations with the spending bill but defended his negotiations with Democrats as a necessity in a divided government with a narrow majority, according to The Hill.  Office of Congressman Mike Johnson/Wikimedia
