The cable news network has experienced a dramatic decline in audience numbers since Donald Trump's electoral win.

Recent Nielsen data shows MSNBC's prime-time viewership has plummeted by 54 percent, with daily average viewers dropping to 736,000 from 1.1 million in the previous month.  DAMON HIGGINS/PALM BEACH POST/USA TODAY NETWORK / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images

MSNBC has witnessed a sharp ratings decline since Rachel Maddow's primetime coverage, which on Election Day drew 6 million viewers and eclipsed CNN's 5.1 million, according to Nielsen data.  Tony Webster / Wikimedia

"This is a difficult time and they needed to keep her. No one else can do what she does. You can't build a brand like it overnight," a network executive reportedly told The Ankler regarding the decision to retain Maddow.  SWinxy / Wikimedia

While MSNBC has not confirmed these figures, the network has seen a 40 percent drop in ratings compared to last year, according to The Daily Beast. Internal sources have expressed concerns about the network's editorial direction.

Executives are also working to address how to balance liberal content with conservative perspectives on what one insider described to The Daily Beast as “the only safe space for a liberal TV audience.”  SWinxy / Wikimedia

Maddow has inked a new five-year contract that reduces her annual earnings from $30 million to $25 million, The Ankler reports.

Maddow as been a fixture at MSNBC since 2008, when The Rachel Maddow Show debuted in its now-iconic 9 p.m. timeslot. The media industry’s struggles aren’t confined to MSNBC. Last week, veteran broadcaster Chris Wallace announced his departure from CNN following cost-cutting measures, including the cancellation of his shows and a proposed salary reduction, according to Puck News.  Ruttenyork / Wikimedia

Wallace denied speculation about his exit, stating, “It doesn’t matter what was or wasn’t said in that meeting because I had already decided with my wife six months ago to leave CNN.”  Kremlin.ru / Wikimedia

As networks like MSNBC and CNN adapt to a shifting media landscape and evolving viewer demands, high-profile anchors like Maddow likely remain pivotal to their future strategies, even if it means negotiating pay cuts to retain their marquee talent.  SWinxy / Wikimedia
