Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene Criticized for Attending Football Game as Hurricane Helene Batters Georgia

By Jake Beardslee · September 30, 2024

Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene has come under fire for leaving her state as Hurricane Helene wreaks havoc on its residents.

Instead of remaining in Georgia to assist with hurricane response efforts, Greene traveled to Tuscaloosa, Alabama, to watch a college football game between Alabama and Georgia with former President Donald Trump, according to The Daily Mail.  Richard Burkhart/Savannah Morning News / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images

The decision has drawn criticism from various quarters, including far-right activist Laura Loomer.  Allen Eyestone / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images

Loomer stated on X: "Instead of being in Georgia to help the people of her state, MTG blew them off and decided to go to the football game in Alabama yesterday instead. It speaks volumes to her lack of focus as a Congresswoman and it really shows she is more interested in fan fare as opposed to helping people in her state."  @LauraLoomer / X

The conflict between Greene and Loomer stems from recent Republican efforts to distance Trump from Loomer, whom they consider a liability due to her controversial statements and conspiracy theories.  Gage Skidmore / Wikimedia

Their public spat escalated after Greene criticized Loomer's racist comments about Vice President Kamala Harris.  Gage Skidmore / Wikimedia

Meanwhile, Hurricane Helene has caused significant damage in Georgia, resultingin at least 25 fatalities and leaving millions without essential utilities.

The storm's impact extends beyond Georgia, with a total of over 100 deaths reported across six states and hundreds of people missing, CNN reported.  Joseph Schwartzburt / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images
