Selena Gomez in Tears Over Trump Admin Immigration Raids: ‘All My People Are Getting Attacked’

By Jake Beardslee · January 28, 2025

Selena Gomez shared an emotional Instagram post responding to the Trump administration’s recent nationwide immigration raids. The Texas-born singer, whose grandparents immigrated to the U.S. from Mexico without documentation, appeared tearful in a since-deleted Instagram Story, alongside a caption reading, “I’m sorry,” accompanied by a Mexican flag emoji. “All my people are getting attacked, the children,” Gomez said in the video. “I don’t understand. I’m so sorry, I wish I could do something but I can’t. I don’t know what to do. I’ll try everything, I promise.”  @selenagomez / Instagram

Nearly 1,000 individuals labeled as “national security threats” by White House ‘border czar’ Tom Homan were arrested during raids under the Trump administration, CNN reports. These operations, led by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in collaboration with federal agencies like the FBI and DEA, targeted major cities such as Chicago, Los Angeles, and Austin. The administration further intensified enforcement by removing restrictions on targeting sensitive locations, including schools, churches, and hospitals.  Omar Ornelas / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images

Gomez has been a vocal supporter of immigrant rights. In 2019, she produced the Netflix series Living Undocumented, which followed immigrant families navigating the threat of deportation. She has also written about her family’s immigration experience, emphasizing the challenges and sacrifices they faced.  Jay Calderon/The Desert Sun / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images

The raids have been met with mixed reactions. Supporters see them as necessary for national security, while critics, including some state officials and immigrant advocacy groups, have raised concerns about the impact on affected communities.

Rep. Adriano Espaillat (D-N.Y.), leader of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, denounced recent enforcement actions, describing the raids as “unwarranted” and emphasizing that they have impacted “not only hardworking individuals but, alarmingly, have also wrongfully targeted U.S. citizens and veterans," he said, according to The Hill. “These actions sow fear, disrupt families, destabilize local economies, and undermine public trust,” Espaillat added.  US House of Representatives / Wikimedia
