By Jake Beardslee · April 21, 2024

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) has called for the resignation of House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) after he worked with Democrats to pass bills approving billions in aid for Ukraine and Israel.  Gage Skidmore from Surprise, AZ, United States of America/Office of Speaker of the House Mike Johnson/Wikimedia

However, her demand has found little support among fellow Republicans, including members of the far-right Freedom Caucus that had previously forced out the previous speaker.  United States House of Representatives - Office of Debbie Lesko/Wikimedia

On Saturday, after the House passed the aid packages, Greene accused Johnson of "betraying" the American people. "This is the third betrayal by Mike Johnson," she told reporters, also criticizing him for renewing the Foreign Surveillance Act and funding the Department of Justice.  Gage Skidmore from Surprise, AZ, United States of America/Wikimedia

Greene called the bill a "foreign war package that does nothing for America." Stating further, "it's unbelievable."  Gage Skidmore from Surprise, AZ, United States of America/Wikimedia

Despite Greene's claim that support for ousting Johnson was "growing," only a handful of far-right Republicans, including Reps. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) and Paul Gosar (R-Ariz.), have publicly backed her effort so far.  Gage Skidmore from Surprise, AZ, United States of America/Wikimedia

Greene warned, "Republican voters will not vote for this again. We will lose the majority in 2025."  Gage Skidmore from Surprise, AZ, United States of America/Wikimedia

However, other Republicans have praised Johnson's leadership and his ability to work across the aisle. "I am so proud of the speaker, Mike Johnson. He went through a transformation," said Rep. Michael McCaul (R-Texas) on on ABC’s “This Week.”  U.S. House Office of Photography/Wikimedia

Johnson himself dismissed Greene's motion as "absurd," stating, "I am not resigning."  Office of Speaker Mike Johnson/Wikimedia

The foreign aid bills, providing about $61 billion for Ukraine, $26 billion for Israel, and $8 billion for Taiwan and other Pacific allies, will now head to the Senate before potentially reaching President Biden's desk.  Adam Schultz/Wikimedia
