In a recent interview with
CNN's Anderson Cooper
, Senator Bernie Sanders offered his thoughts on Vice President Kamala Harris's presidential campaign, economic policy, and the upcoming election.
Sanders refuted claims that Harris is more left-wing than himself, stating, "Kamala Harris is, I would say, a very strong mainstream Democrat." He emphasized that while she has her own views on various issues, suggestions that she is further left than Sanders are "not quite accurate."

During a recent campaign rally in Georgia, former President Donald Trump made comments about Vice President Kamala Harris, comparing her political stance to that of Senator Bernie Sanders. Trump stated, "She is considered more left wing than crazy Bernie Sanders. Look at her. She's worse than Bernie. She made Bernie Sanders look like a moderate because she's an extremist. Further to the left and Bernie Sanders."

"She has put together a campaign. She has been in many parts of the country, brought out huge enthusiastic crowds. She's raising money. The polling is good," Sanders noted, adding that her selection of a vice-presidential candidate was "very good."

Sanders emphasized the importance of focusing on issues that matter to working-class Americans. "At a time when so many of our people in this country are struggling, when you've got 60% of our people living paycheck to paycheck, when we have massive income and wealth inequality, when we have half of our elderly people living on $30,000 or less, I think not only is it the right thing to start talking about issues that are of concern to working-class people, it is really good politics," he explained.

The Senator cited recent polling showing broad support for expanding Social Security benefits, lowering prescription drug costs, and implementing a fairer tax system for billionaires.

"These are not radical left ideas. This is what the overwhelming majority of the American people believe is good policy, including a majority of Republicans," Sanders stated.

When asked about the campaign that Harris and her running mate are conducting, Sanders stated, "You've got to have enormous respect for the fact that just in the last few weeks, she has put together a campaign. She has been in many parts of the country, brought out huge enthusiastic crowds. She's raising money. The polling is good. She selected, I think, a very good vice presidential candidate. All of that speaks a whole lot to her leadership and she deserves a lot of credit for that."

Sanders also addressed the broader political landscape, emphasizing the high stakes of the upcoming election. "This is the most consequential election in a lifetime," he declared. He urged progressives to unite behind Harris, stating, "I think every progressive in America understands that we've got to do everything we can to elect Kamala Harris and Tim Walz."
