294,000 Hyundai and Genesis Owners Have a Seat Belt Problem — and Don’t Know It Yet

By Erica Coleman · May 10, 2026

Hyundai filed a safety recall on April 6. The recall covers 294,128 vehicles. Owner notification letters won’t go out until June 5 — meaning for nearly two months, the people driving those cars have had no official word that their front seat belt anchors may not be properly attached to the seat frame.

If you own a 2024–2026 Hyundai Santa Fe, 2024–2026 Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid, 2023–2025 Hyundai Ioniq 6, or a 2023–2026 Genesis G90, your vehicle may be included. You can check right now — before the letter arrives — by entering your VIN at nhtsa.gov. The recall is NHTSA Campaign Number 26V218. The repair is free.

The defect involves the lower front seat belt anchor — specifically a snap-on clip that attaches the seat belt assembly to the seat frame. When that clip is improperly handled during routine maintenance or repair, it can be damaged in a way that isn’t visible to the driver but leaves the seat belt inadequately secured. If it detaches during a crash, the belt may not restrain the occupant properly.

Hyundai traced the root cause not to the factory but to the service shop. The damage occurs when the snap-on anchor is removed or reinstalled incorrectly during routine maintenance — forceful or improper handling of the anchor can compromise it in a way that cannot be seen from the driver’s seat. If your vehicle has been in for seat repair, interior work, or any service that required removing the front seat assembly, it is worth checking your VIN immediately.

Hyundai says approximately 1% of the 294,128 vehicles in the recall population — roughly 2,900 cars — are believed to carry the actual defect. Six incidents of insufficiently attached seat belt anchors have been reported in the United States, with no injuries or fatalities documented in connection with this recall. The company says there are no related crashes on record.

What to do right now:

Go to nhtsa.gov/recalls and enter your Vehicle Identification Number. The VIN is located on the driver’s side dashboard, visible through the windshield, or on your registration documents. If your vehicle appears in the results under NHTSA Campaign 26V218, contact your nearest Hyundai or Genesis dealership to schedule an inspection.

Dealerships will inspect the lower front seat belt anchor and either reinforce or fully replace it at no charge. Federal law requires all safety recall repairs to be provided free of charge regardless of whether your vehicle is still under warranty. The fix is quick — it does not require leaving your vehicle overnight.

If you have questions before your appointment, contact Hyundai customer service at 855-371-9460. Genesis owners should call 844-340-9741. Both lines are available Monday through Friday during standard business hours.

The official owner notification letters are scheduled to go out June 5. If you want to know before that date whether your car is affected, the answer is at nhtsa.gov, and it takes less than two minutes to check.
