Democrats Escalate Efforts to Counter GOP Gerrymandering
Democrats are mobilizing a redistricting push across multiple states to challenge the Republican Party’s sweeping efforts to redraw congressional maps ahead of the 2026 midterms. The moves in Virginia, New York, and Illinois mark the party’s most significant action yet, following months of internal debate over how to respond to President Donald Trump’s campaign for new GOP-leaning districts. According to POLITICO, Trump’s strategy could yield up to 19 additional Republican-held seats, potentially securing the House majority. Andy Abeyta/The Desert Sun / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images
Jeffries Leads Illinois Campaign to Redraw Maps
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) visited Chicago and Springfield on Monday, meeting with local and federal lawmakers to advocate for new district boundaries that could net Democrats an extra seat in Illinois. Speaking after a meeting with Black leaders, Jeffries said, “This is unprecedented stuff to undermine the ability of the American people to participate in the free and fair election, which is why Democrats, on behalf of the American people, need to respond decisively.” Mickey Welsh / Advertiser / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images
Virginia Moves Toward Constitutional Amendment
In Virginia, lawmakers began advancing a constitutional amendment to allow new congressional lines to be drawn before the 2026 midterms. If approved in consecutive legislative sessions, the proposal would face a statewide referendum next year. Democrats hope to flip as many as three of the state’s eleven congressional districts, but the effort has disrupted local elections. All members of the House of Delegates are currently campaigning while being summoned back to Richmond for the special session.Republicans denounced the timing. GOP gubernatorial candidate Winsome Earle-Sears said, “Democrats in our General Assembly are calling this special session not to serve the people but to serve themselves.” Mickey Welsh / Advertiser / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images
New York Lawsuit Targets GOP-Held District
In New York, the Elias Law Group filed a lawsuit alleging that a Staten Island and Brooklyn congressional district unlawfully dilutes Black and Latino votes. The seat is held by Republican Rep. Nicole Malliotakis, a frequent target for Democratic mapmakers. The lawsuit seeks to remove moderate Brooklyn neighborhoods and replace them with heavily Democratic areas of Lower Manhattan.New York GOP Chair Ed Cox dismissed the case as “a blatant racial gerrymander,” maintaining that the district was already approved by both the courts and the state legislature. Black Caucus Resistance in Illinois
Some of Illinois’ Black leaders oppose redistricting efforts over fears it could weaken their representation. State Sen. Willie Preston, chair of the Senate Black Caucus, stated, “We understand what’s at stake, but if Black representation is going to be diluted, that’s not a map I can support.” https://cbc.house.gov/, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons
Colorado Floats Emergency Option
In Colorado, Attorney General Phil Weiser urged Democrats to consider a “break glass in case of emergency” ballot initiative that would temporarily give the legislature redistricting power for 2028, bypassing the state’s independent commission. Though Democratic Gov. Jared Polis has not endorsed the idea, Weiser argued that action might be necessary if Republican-led states continue their redistricting efforts.
