Al Green to File Impeachment Articles Before Christmas

Democratic Representative Al Green of Texas has declared he will introduce new articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump before Congress adjourns for the holidays. Speaking in Washington, D.C., on Thursday, Green told supporters he planned to bring the measures forward as a privileged motion. “There will be articles of impeachment filed before the Christmas break, this I will pledge to you,” Green said.  The White House / Wikimedia

Historical Context and Political Landscape

Trump was impeached twice during his first presidency but was acquitted by the U.S. Senate on both occasions. With Republicans currently holding the majority in the House of Representatives, any new impeachment attempt is expected to face steep political barriers. While removal from office remains unlikely, such actions could affect Trump’s standing within the GOP and his broader public reputation.  The White House / Wikimedia

Earlier Impeachment Effort Stalled

Green previously filed impeachment articles in May, arguing Trump was “unfit to be President.” That resolution was referred to the House Judiciary Committee, but did not advance toward a full House vote.  U.S. Congress / Wikimedia

Thanedar Filed Seven Articles Against Trump in April

In April, Representative Shri Thanedar introduced seven separate articles of impeachment, citing issues including Trump’s use of the Department of Government Efficiency and his implementation of “damaging tariffs” on U.S. trading partners.  U.S. House of Representatives / Wikimedia

Reaction and Expert Analysis

Green told reporters he had not consulted House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries or other Democratic leaders about this latest effort and did not provide additional specifics. Speaking to Newsweek, Heath Brown, an associate professor of public policy at the City University of New York, said: “Based on what has occurred thus far, I don’t think these articles of impeachment will go very far.”  United States Congress / Wikimedia

Al Green Declares Himself ‘Unbought, Unbossed, Unafraid’

In May, Green told Newsweek: “I am Al Green, an unbought, unbossed, unafraid, liberated Democrat. I will speak truth to power, which is pretty easy to do. You simply say, ‘Power, we have a problem. Let’s solve it. I will do that, but I’ll also speak truth about power and say, power, we have a problem, and you’re it.’”  2C2K Photography from Houston, TX, USA, CC BY 2.0 https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0, via Wikimedia Commons

Trump: ‘Here We Go Again’

Trump, addressing prior impeachment efforts during an April rally, said: “Today they did it again. Some guy that I’ve never heard of…is he a congressman? This guy, he said …’ladies and gentlemen, I am going to start the impeachment of Donald Trump.’ What the hell did I do? Here we go again.”  The White House / Wikimedia

Outlook

Given Republican control of Congress, it remains unlikely that impeachment proceedings will advance. However, the move signals ongoing Democratic efforts to challenge Trump as political tensions escalate heading into the holiday recess.  Forcal35 / Pixabay
