GOP Turmoil Threatens Jan. 6 Certification of Trump Win: Report

By Jake Beardslee · December 26, 2024

The Republican Party could face a major procedural crisis if House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) is removed from his position, potentially delaying the certification of Donald Trump’s presidency on January 6. This scenario, described by Fox News congressional correspondent Chad Pergram as a "doomsday scenario," would stall the House's ability to function entirely.  Jack Gruber / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images

The concern arises from discontent among House Republicans, with Rep. Victoria Spartz (R-IN) acknowledging the challenge of Johnson retaining his leadership role. While she described Johnson as a "good person," she noted, "We're dealing with the mob here, so I'm not sure how tough he is."  Jack Gruber, Jack Gruber / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images

Pergram explained the stakes: "If the House fails to elect a speaker on the first vote, it must vote repeatedly until it elects a speaker." He highlighted historical precedent, recalling how in 2023, it took five days to elect a speaker—the longest such process since 1859. Should a similar delay occur, the House would be unable to certify the Electoral College vote on January 6, a constitutional requirement.  ottonbro studio / Pexels

Pergram also noted that Trump, reportedly frustrated with Johnson, could influence the proceedings. Without a speaker, the House cannot swear in new members or conduct any business, creating a governance vacuum.  KEN BLEVINS/WILMINGTON STAR-NEWS / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images

This potential impasse underscores growing tensions within the GOP and raises questions about the party’s ability to navigate internal divisions while addressing critical constitutional obligations.  Pixabay
