Travis County Libertarians Issue Impeachment Resolution Against Trump

The Libertarian Party of Travis County, Texas, has issued a formal resolution demanding the impeachment and removal of President Donald J. Trump, accusing him of violating constitutional principles through what it calls “lawless, dictatorial pronouncements.” The resolution cites the Trump administration’s immigration policies and treatment of legal residents and U.S. citizens as primary motivations.  The White House / Wikimedia

Deportation Case of Kilmar Abrego Garcia Cited as Key Example

The resolution takes particular aim at the administration’s handling of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a U.S. resident who was mistakenly deported to El Salvador and imprisoned there.

Democrats argue the dispute over Abrego Garcia’s deportation represents more than a single case—it’s the “constitutional crisis” they’ve long cautioned against. This comes after the Supreme Court ordered the administration to “facilitate” Garcia’s return. Despite admitting the deportation was a mistake, the Trump administration maintains it is under no legal obligation to bring him back.  Malcom Hill / Pexels

Trump Suggests Sending U.S. Citizens to El Salvador; Bukele Responds

During a joint press conference with Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele, Trump floated the idea of deporting U.S. citizens to El Salvador, stating, “You gotta build about five more places. It’s not big enough.” Bukele rebuffed calls to return Garcia, saying, “The question is preposterous,” and adding, “We’re not very fond of releasing terrorists,” despite Garcia having no criminal convictions in either country.  The White House / Wikimedia

Resolution Criticizes Visa Revocations and Political Deportation Allegations

The resolution further denounces the revocation of visas from foreign students allegedly linked to extremist ideologies. The resolution claims that the Trump administration had targeted "legal U. S. residents for deportation due to their political viewpoints."  The White House / Wikimedia

Author of Resolution Cites Concerns Over Immigration and Civil Liberties

Ted Brown, the former Libertarian Senate candidate who authored the resolution, told Newsweek: “Trump is trying to deport legal residents because of their political views and even wants to deport American citizens. This is not acceptable in any way. We are at the stage where we have to nip this in the bud before it goes any further.”  tedbrown.org

Resolution Alleges Violation of Presidential Oath and Constitutional Duties

The resolution alleges that President Trump has “no obvious intention” of honoring his oath to “preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States,” and concludes: “Be it resolved, that the Libertarian Party of Travis County calls for the impeachment of President Donald J. Trump and his removal from office.”  House Creative Services / Wikimedia

Future Support from Broader Libertarian Party Remains Uncertain

It remains unclear whether other branches of the Libertarian Party will follow suit. Trump previously addressed the party’s national convention in May 2024, where he received a mixed reception.  Libertarian Party (United States) / Wikimedia
