Greene Slams Congress for Inactivity

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) publicly criticized Speaker Mike Johnson for keeping the House out of session amid the ongoing government shutdown. During an appearance on ABC’s "The View" on Tuesday, the outspoken Republican said, “I have no problem pointing fingers at everyone. And the worst thing that I just can’t get over is we’re not working right now. And I put that criticism directly on the speaker of the House, and we should be at work.”  Gage Skidmore from Surprise, AZ, United States of America, CC BY-SA 2.0 https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0, via Wikimedia Commons

Frustration Over Congress' Paid Recess

Greene, known for her frequent clashes with both parties, emphasized that lawmakers should be working despite the shutdown. “All the people sitting in this audience, they go to work every day, people at home watching the show, they go to work every day. Ladies, you go to work every day,” she told "The View" hosts.  Gage Skidmore from Surprise, AZ, United States of America, CC BY-SA 2.0 https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0, via Wikimedia Commons

Calls Congressional Pay an “Embarrassment”

The Georgia congresswoman went further, calling it “an embarrassment” that members of Congress are still receiving paychecks while government operations remain partially halted. “It is an embarrassment to me that we’re not in session and getting paid,” she said, reflecting the contrast between elected officials and ordinary Americans continuing to work through the crisis.  Elijah Mears / Unsplash

Context: Shutdown Stalls Legislative Business

The House has been largely inactive as the federal government remains shut down, with negotiations stalled over spending bills and internal GOP divisions widening. Greene’s comments add to growing frustration among members and constituents over the lack of visible progress from Congress.  Darren Halstead / Unsplash

Developing Situation

The shutdown has already affected millions of Americans relying on federal services and pay. Greene’s criticism of Johnson highlights deepening tensions within the Republican caucus over leadership strategy during the crisis.  The White House / Wikimedia
