By Jake Beardslee · July 15, 2024

At the Republican National Convention on Monday, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) addressed the recent shooting incident at former President Donald Trump's rally in Pennsylvania. Greene characterized the moment as both "celebratory", due to Trump's nomination, and "somber", given the attack. She expressed gratitude for what she perceived as divine protection, stating, "Two days ago, evil came for the man we admire and love so much. I thank God that his hand was on President Trump."  Mike Desisti-USA TODAY

The FBI has identified the shooter as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks. The incident resulted in the death of Corey Comperatore. "We will honor Corey's memory by building the country he wanted, the country he wanted for his children and a government worthy of the American people," Greene said.  Jasper Colt-USA TODAY

Despite the attack, Trump proceeded with his plans to attend the convention in Milwaukee, ABC News reported. On Monday, he formally secured the Republican nomination following a roll call of states.  Jasper Colt / USA TODAY NETWORK

The convention also featured speeches from other prominent Republicans, including Senators Tim Scott and Ron Johnson. “If you didn’t believe in miracles before Saturday, you better be believing right now,” Scott stated. “A devil came to Pennsylvania holding a rifle, but a lion got back on his feet and he roared,” he continued.  Mike De Sisti / Milwaukee Journal Sentinel / USA TODAY NETWORK

Senator Ron Johnson claimed that Demoratic policies are a “clear and present danger to America, to our institutions, our values and our people”.  Mike De Sisti / Milwaukee Journal Sentinel / USA TODAY NETWORK

The event's theme, "Make America wealthy again," was echoed by speakers like Mark Robinson, Lieutenant Governor of North Carolina, who focused on economic concerns such as rising prices and factory closures.  Jasper Colt / USA TODAY NETWORK
