New Poll Reveals Americans’ Views on Trump’s Performance During His Second Term

By Jake Beardslee · February 9, 2025

Trump’s Approval and Campaign Promises

A recent CBS News/YouGov poll indicates that 70% of Americans believe President Trump is fulfilling his campaign promises, with an overall approval rating of 53%. Respondents describe him as "tough," "energetic," "focused," and "effective."

According to the poll, 70% of Americans say Trump is doing "what he promised" as president, while only 30% feel his administration’s actions have deviated from campaign pledges. Additionally, 53% of respondents approve of his performance so far, compared to 47% who disapprove.  Mark J. Rebilas-Imagn Images

Public Support for Trump’s Immigration Policies

The poll also reveals that 59% of participants support his deportation initiatives, and 64% approve of deploying U.S. troops to the southern border. However, public opinion is more divided on the establishment of large-scale detention centers for undocumented immigrants, with strong support from Trump’s 2024 voters. Critics argue that such policies may have legal and humanitarian implications, raising concerns among civil rights groups.  Omar Ornelas / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images

Economic Concerns and Inflation Priorities

Despite overall positive approval, many Americans feel the administration is not focusing enough on reducing prices, according to polling. Inflation was a pivotal issue in Trump’s 2024 election victory, and lowering the cost of goods and services remains a top concern. Nearly half of Republicans agree that this area requires more attention. Those who believe Trump’s policies will help lower prices generally expect results to take at least six months, though economists remain uncertain about whether his approach will lead to sustained relief.  olia danilevich / Pexels

Tariffs: Strengthening Industry or Raising Prices?

The administration's push for new tariffs has also generated debate. While Republicans support tariffs as a means of strengthening domestic industries, the broader public remains skeptical, with nearly 75% of Americans believing tariffs on imported goods will drive up prices rather than create jobs or curb illicit drug trafficking. Some analysts argue that increased tariffs could lead to higher costs for consumers and strain international trade relations.

Additionally, concerns persist about whether Trump’s foreign policy approach is adequately addressing global stability. His administration has placed an emphasis on military strength and reducing foreign aid, which has been met with mixed reactions both domestically and internationally.  GREG LOVETT/PALM BEACH POST / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images

Elon Musk’s Influence in Government Affairs

The poll also reflects divided opinions on the influence of billionaire Elon Musk in government affairs. While Republicans believe Musk should have some level of influence over government spending, Democrats overwhelmingly oppose his involvement. Nonetheless, Trump’s supporters largely approve of his administration’s focus on cutting foreign aid and government spending.

A narrow majority expressed support for Elon Musk and DOGE, with 23% of Americans stating that the new agency should wield “a lot” of influence over government spending, while 28% said it should have “some,” bringing the total to 51%. In contrast, 18% felt DOGE should exert “not much” influence, and 31% believed it should have “none,” combining for a total of 49%.  Sam Greene/The Enquirer / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images
