Proposed Federal Holiday for Trump’s Birthday and Flag Day

WASHINGTON – Rep. Claudia Tenney (R-N.Y.) has introduced a bill aiming to designate President Donald Trump’s birthday, June 14, as a federal holiday. The proposed legislation, officially named the "Trump’s Birthday and Flag Day Holiday Establishment Act," would permanently recognize the date as "Trump’s Birthday and Flag Day."  Andrew Craft / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images

Flag Day’s Historical Significance

Trump, born on June 14, 1946, shares his birthday with Flag Day, which commemorates the adoption of the American flag in 1777. While Flag Day is not currently a federal holiday, Pennsylvania is the only state that observes it as a legal holiday.  Andrew Craft / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images

Tenney’s Justification for the Holiday

“No modern president has been more pivotal for our country than Donald J. Trump,” Tenney stated in a press release. “As both our 45th and 47th President, he is the most consequential President in modern American history, leading our country at a time of great international and domestic turmoil. From brokering the historic Abraham Accords to championing the largest tax relief package in American history, his impact on the nation is undeniable.”  Jamie Germano/Democrat and Chronicle / USA TODAY NETWORK

Proposal Ties Holiday to U.S. 250th Anniversary

“Additionally, as our nation prepares to celebrate its 250th anniversary, we should create a new federal holiday honoring the American Flag and all that it represents,” Tenney continued. “By designating Trump’s Birthday and Flag Day as a federal holiday, we can ensure President Trump’s contributions to American greatness and the importance of the American Flag are forever enshrined into law.”

Tenney has remained an ally of Trump since 2018, with the former president having campaigned for her re-election that year. The bill, listed as H.R. 1395, is now under consideration in Congress.  United States Congress / Wikimedia

Trump’s Approach to Flag Traditions

In one of his initial executive actions upon commencing his second term, President Donald Trump directed that all American flags be flown at full-staff on Inauguration Day, departing from existing protocols that mandated half-staff positioning during periods of national mourning. This directive came in the midst of a 30-day mourning period for former President Jimmy Carter, who passed away on December 29, 2024. Traditionally, U.S. flags are lowered to half-staff for 30 days following the death of a president.

In response to the executive order, several state governors and officials adjusted their flag protocols accordingly. For instance, House Speaker Mike Johnson ordered flags at the U.S. Capitol to be flown at full-staff on Inauguration Day, with plans to return them to half-staff the following day to continue honoring President Carter.   SAM GREENE/THE ENQUIRER/USA TODAY NETWORK / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images
