Cultural Clash Over Bad Bunny

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) took aim at Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) after Greene criticized Puerto Rican artist Bad Bunny’s upcoming Super Bowl halftime show. Greene and other MAGA-aligned conservatives voiced anger over Bad Bunny’s Spanish lyrics and his political views. The controversy intensified after the performer said during "Saturday Night Live," “If you didn’t understand what I just said, you have four months to learn.”  Josh Morgan / USA TODAY NETWORK

Greene Calls for English-Only Law

Following Bad Bunny’s “SNL” appearance, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) wrote on X: “Bad Bunny says America has 4 months to learn Spanish before his perverse unwanted performance at the Super Bowl halftime. It would be a good time to pass my bill to make English the official language of America.”  Win McNamee-Pool via Imagn Images

AOC Fires Back on Instagram

Ocasio-Cortez responded in an Instagram story, offering her take on why Greene and her allies were upset. “I want to let you know I’ve worked on a committee with this woman. I’ve seen her try to read,” Ocasio-Cortez said.  Caassemblyedits, CC BY-SA 4.0 https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0, via Wikimedia Commons

AOC’s Response to Greene Sparks Debate Over Language and Tone

“They’re not mad because he’s speaking Spanish. They’re mad and she’s mad because she can barely speak English, and the idea of introducing any more words is too much to bear. She may have just learned acetaminophen this week,” Ocasio-Cortez continued.

Her comments quickly went viral, with supporters applauding her sharp response while critics accused her of personal attacks.  Dimitri Rodriguez, CC BY 2.0 https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0, via Wikimedia Commons

AOC's Broader Pattern of Humor

This exchange comes shortly after Ocasio-Cortez mocked Trump adviser Stephen Miller’s height during a livestream, saying he looked “so mad that he is 4’10” that he’s taking that anger out at any other population possible.”  The White House / Wikimedia
