Report: Jim Jordan ‘Itching’ to Unseat Mike Johnson if GOP Loses House Control

By Jake Beardslee · September 20, 2024

As the 2024 election draws near, speculation mounts about potential changes in House Republican leadership, particularly if the GOP loses its slim majority.

While current House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) is likely to retain his position if Republicans maintain control, a loss could trigger a leadership battle.  Gage Skidmore / Wikimedia

According to Punchbowl News, Representatives Steve Scalise (R-LA) and Jim Jordan (R-OH) are positioning themselves for a potential run at the top leadership spot should Republicans lose their majority.  Jasper Colt-USA TODAY

Sources close to the situation suggest that Jordan, in particular, is eager for another opportunity to lead the party in the House.

Punchbowl News writes, "the Ohio Republican’s colleagues believe Jordan has been itching to make a move and would make a play for the top spot."  Gage Skidmore / Wikimedia

Jordan, who previously attempted to secure the speakership but faced defeat, has reportedly been on an extensive campaign trail.

He's visited not only conservative strongholds but also swing districts in states like New York.  Gage Skidmore / Wikimedia

Notably, Jordan has been campaigning for Republicans who previously opposed his bid for speaker, indicating a strategic approach to building support within the party.  Gage Skidmore / Wikimedia

However, Jordan's political aspirations are complicated by his controversial past.

He faces ongoing allegations from former Ohio State University wrestlers who claim he ignored sexual abuse by a team doctor during his tenure as a wrestling coach.  Gage Skidmore / Wikimedia
