Trump Insists Groceries Are Cheaper—Polling Shows Americans Disagree

By Jake Beardslee · November 15, 2025

Trump Dismisses Economic Anxiety

President Donald Trump asserted that consumer prices are “way down” during a recent Fox News interview, even as polling shows most Americans continue to feel squeezed by elevated costs. The exchange unfolded on Fox News’ “Special Report,” where host Bret Baier pressed Trump with concerns from a longtime supporter troubled by the economy.  The White House / Wikimedia

Voter Pleads for Relief

Baier read a message from Regina Foley, a North Carolina retiree who has voted for Trump three times. Foley said she did not “see the best economy now,” adding, “Please do something, President Trump.” She urged action from the administration, emphasizing that “Wall Street numbers do not reflect Main Street money.”  Karola G / Pexels

Trump Rejects Concerns and Praises His Record

Rather than acknowledge the rising costs many households report, Trump brushed aside Foley’s worries. “Beef we have to get down. I think of groceries — it’s an old-fashioned word, but it’s a beautiful word. Beef we have to get down. But we’ve got prices way down,” he said. Trump argued that falling energy prices justify his optimism: “Think of this: [Foley] drives a car, probably, and her energy prices are way down and energy is so all-encompassing. It’s so big that when energy comes down, everything comes down. Everything follows it, and I have energy down to five-six-year lows now.”  The White House / Wikimedia

President Says GOP Messaging Is the Problem

Trump maintained that costs are already improving. “I think they are coming down, but they are down already. I think the biggest problem is Republicans don’t talk about it. They don’t talk about the word ‘affordability,’ and the Democrats lie about it,” he said. His assertions conflict with recent national polling, which shows most Americans continue to face higher prices.  Staff Sgt. Danny Gonzalez / Wikimedia

Polling: Americans Still Feeling the Squeeze

According to surveys from The Washington Post, ABC News, and Ipsos, seven in 10 adults say groceries cost more than they did a year ago, and 59% report higher utility bills. Price pressures cut across party lines: nearly 90% of Democrats and a majority of Republicans—52%—say grocery costs remain elevated. Overall, 59% of Americans say Trump bears at least some responsibility for ongoing inflation.  Amrothman / Pixabay
