Trump Sees Drop in Strong Republican Support, Poll Finds
By Jake Beardslee · June 17, 2025

A new poll from NBC News Decision Desk and SurveyMonkey shows a decline in the number of Republicans who “strongly approve” of President Donald Trump. The share dropped by five percentage points compared to April. His overall approval rating remains unchanged at 45 percent approval and 55 percent disapproval.
Much of the shift comes from supporters who identify with Trump’s Make America Great Again movement. Many of these individuals now say they “somewhat approve” rather than “strongly approve” of the president.
The poll also found that fewer MAGA-aligned voters described themselves as “thrilled” with the administration’s actions so far. That number fell to 37 percent, down from 46 percent in April. Disapproval remains high among independents, with 65 percent expressing dissatisfaction. In addition, 51 percent of Democrats said they feel “furious” about the administration’s decisions.
NBC News Chief Data Analyst Steve Kornacki commented on Meet the Press, saying there is “much more negative energy on the Democratic side than there is positive on the Republican side.” He added that this could signal a partisan imbalance heading into the midterm elections. “We’ve seen it in special elections. This is something, I think, to keep an eye on, too.”
The survey was conducted online between May 30 and June 10, with a national sample of 19,410 adults. It carries an estimated margin of error of plus or minus 2.1 percentage points.
