Acting President Han Faces Impeachment Vote from South Korea’s Opposition Party

By Jake Beardslee · December 26, 2024

South Korea's Democratic Party, the main opposition group, has introduced a bill to impeach Acting President and Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, planning to vote on the measure soon. This move could intensify the political crisis stemming from President Yoon Suk Yeol's recent impeachment and martial law declaration.  제주특별자치도청, KOGL Type 1 / Wikimedia

The opposition demands that Han immediately appoint three Constitutional Court justices approved by parliament. However, Han insists that appointments require political consensus to uphold constitutional integrity. Democratic Party leader Park Chan-dae criticized Han’s inaction, stating, "It has become clear that Prime Minister and acting President Han Duck-soo does not have the qualification or the will to safeguard the Constitution," Reuters reported.  namu.wiki

The impeachment effort, citing Han's veto of an investigative bill targeting the first lady, requires a vote within 72 hours. If passed, the finance minister would assume acting presidency. Disagreement exists over whether a simple majority or two-thirds majority is needed for impeachment.  IAEA Imagebank / Wikimedia

Yoon's impeachment trial begins Friday, with six of the court's current justices needing unanimous agreement to remove him. Meanwhile, Yoon's failure to cooperate with legal and criminal investigations has sparked calls for his arrest.  Presidential Residence of South Korea / Wikimedia
