Former President Trump Targeted In Alleged Assassination Attempt At Florida Golf Club

By CM Chaney · September 16, 2024

In a shocking turn of events, former President Donald Trump was the target of what the FBI described as an "apparent attempted assassination" on Sunday afternoon at his golf club in West Palm Beach, Florida, according to NPR.

The incident has sent ripples through the political landscape and raised concerns about the safety of high-profile political figures.

According to Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw, the drama unfolded around 1:30 p.m. ET when the Secret Service alerted local authorities about multiple gunshots at Trump's golf course.  Rob Schumacher/The Republic / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images

A quick-thinking Secret Service agent, positioned one hole ahead of the former president, spotted an AK-style rifle protruding from a fence on the golf course premises.

The agent swiftly engaged with the armed individual, prompting the suspect to flee in a black Nissan. In response, Secret Service agents opened fire on the fleeing suspect.

Sheriff Bradshaw revealed that the suspect was approximately 300 to 500 yards from Trump's location, noting ominously, "With a rifle and scope like that, it's not a long distance."  Damon Higgins / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Image

The suspect, later identified as Ryan Wesley Routh by local officials, was apprehended on Interstate 95 following a witness's report of the vehicle's description and license plate.

Martin County Sheriff William D. Snyder described Routh as "relatively calm" upon detention, adding, "He was not displaying a lot of emotions. Never asked, 'What is this about?'"

In the aftermath of the incident, Trump took to social media to reassure his supporters. In an email dispatched by his campaign, he wrote, "There were gunshots in my vicinity, but before rumors start spiraling out of control, I wanted you to hear this first: I AM SAFE AND WELL!"  Matthew Dae Smith/Lansing State Journal / USA TODAY NETWORK

Later, on Truth Social, Trump expressed his gratitude, stating, "Most importantly, I want to thank the U.S. Secret Service, Sheriff Ric Bradshaw and his Office of brave and dedicated Patriots, and, all of Law Enforcement, for the incredible job done today at Trump International in keeping me, as the 45th President of the United States, and the Republican Nominee in the upcoming Presidential Election, SAFE. THE JOB DONE WAS ABSOLUTELY OUTSTANDING. I AM VERY PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN!"

This incident marks the second time in recent months that Trump has been the target of violence. In July, the Republican presidential nominee was wounded in an assassination attempt during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

The security breach has prompted discussions about the adequacy of protection for presidential candidates. Local officials noted that security measures for a nominee differ from those for a sitting president, with fewer Secret Service agents present and potential vulnerabilities in the surrounding landscape.  DAMON HIGGINS/THE PALM BEACH DAILY NEWS / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images

Rafael Barros, Special Agent in Charge of the Miami Field Office, acknowledged the heightened risk, stating, "The threat level is high," and confirming that additional security assets have been deployed. He grimly added, "We live in dangerous times."

The incident has drawn reactions from across the political spectrum. The White House reported that President Biden and Vice President Harris were briefed on the situation and expressed relief at Trump's safety.  Josh Morgan/USA TODAY / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, after being briefed by the Secret Service, condemned the act of violence, stating, "There is no place in this country for political violence of any kind. The perpetrator must be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law."

As the investigation unfolds, questions remain about the motivation behind the attack and the potential implications for campaign security in the lead-up to the 2024 presidential election.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the persistent threats faced by political figures and the ongoing challenges in ensuring their safety in an increasingly polarized political climate.   Jasper Colt / USA TODAY NETWORK
