Greene Escalates Rift By Accusing Trump of ‘Gaslighting’ Americans

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene is intensifying her criticisms of President Donald Trump, openly challenging his economic claims and warning that his message on prices is alienating voters. Her latest comments mark another sharp break within the Republican Party as she continues pressing her criticism of her own political allies.  Gage Skidmore from Surprise, AZ, United States of America, CC BY-SA 2.0 https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0, via Wikimedia Commons

Greene Rebukes Trump’s Messaging on Inflation

Speaking Thursday on “The Sean Spicer Show,” Greene took aim at Trump’s repeated insistence that inflation and grocery prices have dropped. “President Trump and his administration does deserve a lot of credit for lowering inflation and holding it steady, but that doesn’t bring prices down, and so gaslighting the people and trying to tell them that prices have come down is not helping, it’s actually infuriating people,” she told the former White House press secretary.  The White House / Wikimedia

Congresswoman Says Americans Know Their Costs Better Than Politicians

Greene argued that Americans do not need political spin to understand their own financial reality. “People know what they’re paying at the grocery store,” she said. “They know what they’re paying for their kids’ clothes and school supplies. They know what they’re paying for their electricity bills.”  Gage Skidmore from Surprise, AZ, United States of America, CC BY-SA 2.0 https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0, via Wikimedia Commons

Calls for Compassion Over Denial

Greene said the administration’s communication strategy “does not work” and urged a new approach that acknowledges voters’ frustration. “We need compassion and [to] show that we care about the American people, and show that we are in the trenches with them on what they’re going through,” she continued. “You don’t gaslight them. You don’t lecture them, and you don’t deny what’s happening.”  Gage Skidmore from Surprise, AZ, United States of America, CC BY-SA 2.0 https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0, via Wikimedia Commons

Greene Links Inflation to Government Spending

The Georgia Republican reiterated her long-standing argument that federal spending is a primary driver of inflation. She pointed to the roughly 9% inflation rate in 2022, referencing the CARES Act from Trump’s first term, before shifting to criticize former President Joe Biden and former Speaker Nancy Pelosi for approving “massive pieces of legislation.”  Tumisu / Pixabay

Trump Responds, Says Greene Has ‘Lost Her Way’

During a Q&A on Monday, Trump addressed Greene’s criticism for the first time. “I don’t know what happened to Marjorie. She’s a nice woman, but I don’t know what happened. She’s lost her way, I think,” he said.  The White House / Wikimedia

Analyst Warns Trump’s Strategy Could Backfire

CNN chief data analyst Harry Enten added his own assessment Wednesday, saying Trump’s refusal to acknowledge voters’ economic anxieties could be politically costly. “Donald Trump might be trying to downplay voters’ concerns about affordability, but I’m here to tell you that is a ginormous error,” Enten said. “It may be an error that goes down in political infamy.”  The White House / Wikimedia
