By Jake Beardslee · November 25, 2025

Democrats Hold Double-Digit Lead on Congressional Ballot

A new NPR/PBS News/Marist survey shows Democrats leading Republicans 55% to 41% on the 2026 generic congressional ballot, with President Donald Trump’s weakening standing forming part of the backdrop. Voters cited rising prices and a desire for greater national stability as the forces shaping their preferences.  The White House / Wikimedia

Trump’s Approval Falls to 39%

President Donald Trump’s job approval dropped to 39%, according to the poll—one of the key factors underpinning the Democratic lead. A majority of respondents expressed strong disapproval of his performance, signaling an electorate increasingly anxious for economic stability and policy consistency.  The White House / Wikimedia

Voters Prioritize Economic Relief Over Other Issues

The survey found that 57% of respondents want the Trump administration to focus on lowering prices, while 16% prioritize immigration, underscoring the economic pressures shaping public opinion. Independents broke sharply toward Democrats by a 61%–28% margin, widening the overall partisan gap.  Tabrez Syed / Unsplash

Shutdown Fault Lines Further Divide Public Opinion

The poll measured blame for the ongoing government shutdown, with 39% faulting congressional Democrats, 34% blaming Trump, and 26% placing responsibility on Republicans in Congress. The diffuse spread of blame suggests widespread frustration across the political spectrum.  Chad Stembridge / Unsplash

Confidence in Institutions Reaches New Lows

Public trust in major institutions remained bleak. Only 38% expressed trust in the Presidency or Supreme Court, while trust in Congress fell to 20%. The poll also indicates declining confidence in both the Democratic Party and the media compared with levels recorded two years ago.  Ian Hutchinson / Unsplash
