Rep. Lauren Boebert Faces Legal Trouble Over Unpaid Speeding Ticket

By Jake Beardslee · July 12, 2024

Representative Lauren Boebert, a Republican from Colorado's 4th Congressional District, recently encountered legal issues stemming from a speeding violation, according to Newsweek. The incident, which occurred on May 12, has raised questions about the congresswoman's driving record and her compliance with traffic laws.  Curtis Means/Pool via USA TODAY

The Colorado State Patrol told CBS News that Boebert was caught driving 84 mph in a 65 mph zone on I-70's Vail Pass. The violation resulted in a $174.50 fine, which the representative initially failed to pay within the required 20-day period.  Curtis Means/Pool via USA TODAY NETWORK

Due to the delayed payment, the case was escalated to an Eagle County court. Drew Sexton, Boebert's campaign manager, confirmed that the fine was eventually paid on July 3. He explained that there had been a mix-up with the payment method, stating that Boebert had mailed a check which was returned to her for unclear reasons.  Jack Gruber, Jack Gruber / USA TODAY NETWORK

An Eagle County court clerk provided insight into the resolution, telling news outlet Westword, "She called and said, 'I have a ticket with a court date and I need to take care of it.' She contacted the court on July 3 and paid it online."  Jack Gruber-USA TODAY

This incident is not Boebert's first encounter with traffic-related legal issues. In her 2022 book "My American Life," she recounts a 2016 incident where she was cited for reckless driving after her truck slid off a dangerous road.  Anna Lynn Winfrey/The Pueblo Chieftain / USA TODAY NETWORK

This citation led to an arrest warrant when she failed to pay the ticket, resulting in her arrest during a subsequent traffic stop.  Jack Gruber-USA TODAY

Reflecting on these incidents in her book, Boebert acknowledged her mistakes, writing, "But when it gets down to it, I don't really have an excuse. I should have shown up to court. I should have paid the tickets on time. I should have shown law enforcement the respect they deserve. I should have played by the rules."  Jack Gruber-USA TODAY

These recurring traffic violations and legal complications have drawn attention to the representative's driving record and her adherence to traffic laws. As a public figure, Boebert's actions continue to be scrutinized, with this latest incident adding to the ongoing discussion about her conduct both in and out of office.  Jack Gruber-USA TODAY
