Former Democratic presidential candidate Andrew Yang has revealed he reached out to billionaire Elon Musk about joining forces to form a new political party. In an interview with Politico Magazine, Yang expressed optimism about the idea, saying that he and mutual contacts believe Musk has the influence and vision to help establish a new political movement that could reshape American politics.

“Not yet, but I assume he’s been very busy,” Yang said when asked if Musk had replied to his inquiry. “We have been of the opinion that America needed a new political party for a number of years, and so waiting another 24 hours is nothing.”

The idea comes amid Musk’s growing dissatisfaction with both major parties, most recently illustrated by his opposition to Donald Trump’s “big, beautiful bill.” Musk worked with the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to identify spending cuts, only to oppose the bill over its debt-expanding measures.

Yang—who founded the Forward Party in 2021—said he views Musk as a valuable political outsider capable of tackling systemic problems. “I want to work with people that recognize that America’s political system has gone from dysfunctional to polarizing to even worse,” Yang said. “And at this point, the fastest growing political movement in the United States is independents.”

Yang emphasized that many Americans feel alienated by the entrenched two-party system. “They feel like neither party represents them,” he said, “and the two-party system is not delivering what they want to see.”

He pointed to Musk’s varied political track record as evidence of his potential appeal across the spectrum. “If you look at Musk’s politics over the last number of years, he waited in line to meet Barack Obama, he endorsed me in a Democratic cycle, and even earlier in this cycle — 2024 — he was looking for an alternative to Trump,” Yang said.

Musk donated heavily to Republican candidates in recent years but has distanced himself from the GOP in 2025. Yang believes Musk shares common ground with those who seek “some kind of middle ground or balance” beyond the traditional partisan divide.
