Memorial Excludes Trump and Vance

President Donald Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance were reportedly left off the guest list for the memorial service honoring former Vice President Richard B. Cheney at the National Cathedral. Cheney, who died at 84 due to pneumonia and heart and vascular complications, was honored at a private ceremony attended by roughly 1,000 invited guests.  Office of Vice President of the United States / Wikimedia

Bipartisan Leaders Attend Ceremony

Organizers confirmed that the service included a wide spectrum of former national leaders: Presidents George W. Bush and Joe Biden, former Vice Presidents Kamala Harris, Mike Pence, and Al Gore, along with several sitting Supreme Court justices.  (U.S. Army photo by Christopher Kaufmann) / Wikimedia

Bush Praises Cheney’s Legacy

In remarks about his former vice president, Bush highlighted Cheney’s stability in office, calling him a “calm and steady presence.” Bush added that Cheney was “among the finest public servants of his generation.”  (U.S. Army photo by Christopher Kaufmann) / Wikimedia

Cheney’s 2024 Break With GOP

Cheney’s estrangement from Trump-aligned Republicans intensified in 2024 after he publicly endorsed Vice President Harris for president. At the time, he said, “We have a duty to put country above partisanship to defend our Constitution.”  Lawrence Jackson / Wikimedia

Trump Condemns Democrats’ Strategy

Trump responded sharply to reports that the Cheney family had aligned with Democrats during the 2024 campaign. In a written statement last year, he said that “The Democrats made a BIG mistake in getting Crazy Liz Chaney, and her father, Dick, involved in their campaign for President.”

He continued, “It made the Republicans angry, and the Democrats just plain scratching their heads in amazement. It is always a bad idea to bring ‘losers’ into a political campaign!”  The White House / Wikimedia
