Biden Campaign Doubles Down on 2024 Bid Amid Age Concerns

By Jake Beardslee · July 16, 2024

In a recent interview with ABC News' Linsey Davis, Quenton Fulks, principal Deputy campaign manager for the Biden-Harris campaign, reaffirmed President Biden's commitment to the 2024 presidential race, despite growing concerns about his age and calls from some Democrats for him to step aside.

Fulks emphasized that the campaign's message remains unchanged, focusing on key issues such as reproductive rights, Social Security, Medicare, and healthcare. "We haven't shifted our message," Fulks stated. "We have been focused on the issues that matter."  Mandi Wright / USA TODAY NETWORK

When questioned about the certainty of Biden's candidacy, Fulks responded with an unequivocal "absolutely," citing strong support from registered Democrats in the primaries. "President Biden has said himself, he will be the nominee," Fulks affirmed.  The White House / Wikimedia

"That is where our focus has been since the outset of this campaign," he explained, "and we're going to continue to communicate the stark contrast and the very different visions for America on those issues to American voters."  Number 10 / Wikimedia

Fulks highlighted Biden's stance on abortion rights, saying, "President [Biden] will not allow Republicans to institute a National Abortion ban." He also emphasized Biden's focus on expanding healthcare and protecting Social Security and Medicare.  Biden for President / Wikimedia

When confronted with the fact that a small but vocal group of House Democrats, along with a majority of registered Democrats in some polls, have suggested Biden should step aside, Fulks remained resolute. "Absolutely," he affirmed when asked if Biden would be at the top of the ticket come November.

He countered the narrative by pointing out that "a majority of registered Democrats also voted for President Biden in the primaries, about 14.5 million - 87% - as well as the 3,900 delegates that President Biden has earned."  The White House / Wikimedia

Addressing the elephant in the room - Biden's age - Fulks didn't shy away from the topic. When questioned about campaign strategy in swing states given the limitations of an 81-year-old candidate, Fulks stated, "That 81-year-old candidate is going to continue to hit the battleground states as he has been since the outset of this election." Looking ahead, Fulks outlined upcoming campaign activities, including Biden's participation in the NAACP and Unidos conferences, where he will engage with core constituencies of the Democratic party. The campaign strategy, according to Fulks, involves both the President and Vice President Kamala Harris continuing to "campaign across this country, talking about the stakes of this election and the vision that they have."  The White House / Wikimedia

As the 2024 election draws nearer, with at least seven swing states in play and less than four months until voting begins, the Biden-Harris campaign is betting that their policy-focused approach and active ground game will resonate with American voters. Whether this strategy will be enough to secure a second term for President Biden remains to be seen.  The White House / Wikimedia
