Donald Trump Impeachment Push Gains New Momentum in Congress
By Jake Beardslee · December 10, 2025
Texas Representative Al Green has reiterated his intention to file new articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump, signaling that the effort will be formally launched before Congress adjourns for Christmas.
Green said, according to Newsweek, that he was “moving to bring impeachment again” and added that the rationale behind his decision will become clear once the articles are formally submitted. He argued that Trump “doesn’t respect the separation of powers” and targets House members who oppose him. “I will bringing articles of impeachment,” Green said. “I will be doing what I believe is right to protect the republic.”
Trump was impeached twice during his previous term but avoided conviction in the Senate both times. With Republicans currently holding the House majority, an impeachment drive is unlikely to advance. Still, Democrats believe the move could further pressure Trump and strain his political relationships within the GOP.
Speaking on the House floor, Green cited the late Vice President Dick Cheney, who had described Trump as a “threat to our republic” for efforts to overturn the 2020 election. He also labeled Trump “the intimidator in chief,” accusing him of acting against lawmakers who refuse to support him. “He doesn’t believe in separation of powers, he disrespects the House and the Senate, the members who don’t give him what he desires, he is also a person who thinks that he can literally do whatever he pleases,” Green said.
Green again asserted that Trump “incited the insurrection” on January 6 and criticized Trump’s decision, after returning to office, to pardon more than 1,500 people and commute 14 sentences for individuals involved in the Capitol attack. The congressman warned that he feared similar unrest could occur in the future. “I believe that he will find great difficulty in stepping down from office,” he said.
The remarks follow Green’s November pledge to file articles of impeachment as a privileged resolution before the holiday recess. “There will be articles of impeachment filed before the Christmas break, this I will pledge to you,” he said. Green had earlier introduced impeachment articles in May, contending Trump was “unfit to be president.”
Other impeachment efforts have surfaced within the Democratic caucus as well. In April, Representative Shri Thanedar introduced seven articles of impeachment citing Trump’s use of the Department of Government Efficiency and what he characterized as “damaging tariffs” imposed on U.S. trading partners.
Green previously told Newsweek: “I am Al Green, an unbought, unbossed, unafraid, liberated Democrat. I will speak truth to power, which is pretty easy to do. You simply say, ‘Power, we have a problem. Let’s solve it. I will do that, but I’ll also speak truth about power and say, power, we have a problem, and you’re it.’”
Trump, responding at an April rally to earlier impeachment filings, dismissed the moves. “Today they did it again. Some guy that I’ve never heard of…is he a congressman? This guy, he said…‘ladies and gentlemen, I am going to start the impeachment of Donald Trump.’ What the hell did I do? Here we go again.”
Green has urged lawmakers to follow their judgment when the articles are introduced. “Vote your conscience,” he said.
