A new national survey shows Americans remain deeply divided over President Donald Trump’s second term, with negative views growing stronger.

According to a YouGov and The Economist poll conducted August 15–18, nearly two-thirds of Americans say they have strong opinions about Trump, and most of those opinions are unfavorable. The survey found 47% of respondents said they “strongly disapprove” of the president’s performance, compared with 23% who said they “strongly approve.”

In total, about 70% of Americans fall into the most polarized categories, either “strongly approve” or “strongly disapprove.” Only 27% expressed more moderate views, saying they “somewhat approve” or “somewhat disapprove.”

The partisan split remains clear. Most Democrats disapprove of Trump while most Republicans approve. The intensity is sharper among Democrats, with 83% strongly disapproving, compared with just over half of Republicans — 54% — who strongly approve.

That represents a shift from earlier this year. In January, 69% of Americans said they had strong feelings about Trump, but the balance was closer, with 36% strongly disapproving and 34% strongly approving. The latest results reflect an 11-point rise in strong disapproval and a nine-point drop in strong approval since the beginning of the year.

Overall, Trump’s approval now stands at 40%, with 56% disapproving. The survey polled 1,568 adults and carries a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.
