Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced his resignation as Liberal Party leader on January 6, 2025. According to the Washington Post, Trudeau plans to remain prime minister until his successor is chosen in a "robust, nationwide competitive process." However, political pollsters point out that the Liberal Party in Canada rose with Trudeau and will likely fall with him.

Trudeau Steps Down, Poilievre's Surge Hints at Trump Alignment
Trudeau faces party dissent after surviving three non-confidence votes, relying on a deal with the NDP. The Liberals trail in polls, with Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre leading by 20 points. Some speculate Poilievre might align Canadian policy with the re-elected U.S. President Donald Trump as right-wing parties gain globally.
However, Trudeau struck a different chord,
stating during his resignation speech
, “This country deserves a real choice in the next election, and it has become clear to me that if I am having to fight internal battles, I cannot be the best option.”

Freeland's Scathing Critique of Leadership Tactics
Trudeau's resignation wasn't without
signals of internal issues
. In December, his former finance minister and deputy prime minister, Chrystia Freeland, issued a scathing resignation letter accusing Trudeau of using political gimmicks to appease voters.
She criticized policies, including a costly Christmas tax holiday and a lack of action to steady Canada's finances ahead of a possible trade war with the United States.

, claiming, "Many people in Canada LOVE being the 51st State... The United States can no longer suffer the massive Trade Deficits and Subsidies that Canada needs to stay afloat. Justin Trudeau knew this, and resigned."
Economists suggest
Canada should diversify trade partners
. The Conversation noted, "Stronger ties with emerging economies would strengthen Canada’s bargaining position with the U.S."

Trudeau Ends Leadership, Guides Canada Through Trade Crisis
The resignation marks the end of nearly a decade of Trudeau’s Liberal leadership, who grew up in the political spotlight and followed in the footsteps of his father, former Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau.
However, Trudeau will continue to lead Canada when Trump takes office later this month. He will lead his country's initial response to the new US administration and any looming trade battles.
Trudeau confirmed that he had received permission from Canada's governor general to suspend all parliamentary business until March 24.
Potential Trudeau successors include:
- Mark Carney, former Bank of Canada governor
- Mélanie Joly, Foreign Minister
- Dominic LeBlanc, Finance Minister
- Chrystia Freeland

Canada’s Strengths Drive Growth, But Trade Challenges Persist
The Conversation emphasized Canada's intrinsic strengths: "abundant natural resources, a highly educated and skilled population, and good institutions." Canada's future lies in bridging trade discrepancies and laying the groundwork for a more resilient and diversified economy with global partners.
