After a four-week trial, actor Kevin Spacey was acquitted by a jury Wednesday of charges that he sexually assaulted three men in London between 2004 and 2013. Spacey, 64, broke down in tears when the verdict was read, mouthing, “Thank you,” to the jurors.
In a statement outside the London courthouse, Spacey expressed gratitude for the verdict. “I am enormously grateful to the jury for having taken the time to examine all of the evidence and all of the facts carefully before they reached their decision. I am humbled by the outcome today,” he said.
Spacey acknowledged the court staff as well, saying, “I also want to thank the staff inside this courthouse - the security and all those who took care of us every single day.” He then thanked “my legal team, Evan Lowenstein and Lucy, for being here every day.” Lucy is Lowenstein’s wife and law partner.
Spacey concluded by saying “That’s all I have to say for the moment. Thank you very much.”
The two-time Academy Award winner had denied nine counts of sexual assault and battery involving three men in separate incidents in London between 2004 and 2013, when he was serving as artistic director of the city’s Old Vic Theatre. The jury acquitted Spacey on all charges after deliberating for nearly 12 and a half hours over three days.
